There were many aspects of this book that I didn't care for。 First, it's very dark, disturbing tale about the worst of humanity。 If you don't want a "downer", I'd skip this book。It is also one of those books that tells a "then" and "now" in each chapter, for each character。 It makes for a confusing read since you have to remember what that particular character had last done/thought a few chapters ago。Finally, it has far too many characters than necessary。。some simple noise or filler。I've not rea There were many aspects of this book that I didn't care for。 First, it's very dark, disturbing tale about the worst of humanity。 If you don't want a "downer", I'd skip this book。It is also one of those books that tells a "then" and "now" in each chapter, for each character。 It makes for a confusing read since you have to remember what that particular character had last done/thought a few chapters ago。Finally, it has far too many characters than necessary。。some simple noise or filler。I've not read this author again, and likely won't ever again。 。。。more

Couldn't get into this one。 Can't stand overused tropes like therapist-patient relationships。 Or attempts to normalize them。 Couldn't get into this one。 Can't stand overused tropes like therapist-patient relationships。 Or attempts to normalize them。 。。。more

This one kept me up way to late figuring out who the true murderer was。 A podcast presents questions about a horrific rape and murder 24 years ago in a small town。The crime scene was peeled back a layer at a time until the truth was apparent。put together very well!

Great story about an old and current problem。It was a great story that deserves five stars。 The only thing I didn't like is how the chapters were titled。 I like the numeric。The story was great will keep you on your toes。 Very worth the read。 Great story about an old and current problem。It was a great story that deserves five stars。 The only thing I didn't like is how the chapters were titled。 I like the numeric。The story was great will keep you on your toes。 Very worth the read。 。。。more

A must read!! A well written book that keeps you guessing。 Many surprises。 Heartstrings are pulled。 Shows you how an action or lie that seems so harmless and small can turn into a deviating ripple affect for someone else。 That secrets can sometimes do more damage being kept than being told。

Tina Trussoni

ExcellentGripping and unsuspecting at every turn。 Engaging until the end。 It also makes me realize how truths must be faced no matter what。

Hard to put downThis was one of the best books I’ve read in a long long time。From the first page I was hooked!I finally finished it last night around midnight, sadly。I loved how it went from the past to Present day。 It was A challenge keeping up!,

ExcellentSuch a gripping read and so well constructed。 The layers of truth are peeled back one by one to reveal an excellent story。

It was a bit of a struggle to get into the story at first。 I would say the first half was kind of a drag, but after about 150 pages I was pulled in and tore through the rest。 A good story about a teen who does not fit and secrets that rip a part a community many years later。 I'm glad I stuck with it。 It was a bit of a struggle to get into the story at first。 I would say the first half was kind of a drag, but after about 150 pages I was pulled in and tore through the rest。 A good story about a teen who does not fit and secrets that rip a part a community many years later。 I'm glad I stuck with it。 。。。more

I almost didn't read this。。。I started reading this book and found myself getting cold feet。 I DIDN'T want to know where it was going to go。 Like many others since covid, I find myself avoiding unnecessary unpleasantness and this book was definitely going to deal with unpleasantness。 Something kept me reading, however and I'm glad I did。 The story is well crafted and complex, though not to the point where one has to go back and reread sections to determine what just happened。 ( I think of that as I almost didn't read this。。。I started reading this book and found myself getting cold feet。 I DIDN'T want to know where it was going to go。 Like many others since covid, I find myself avoiding unnecessary unpleasantness and this book was definitely going to deal with unpleasantness。 Something kept me reading, however and I'm glad I did。 The story is well crafted and complex, though not to the point where one has to go back and reread sections to determine what just happened。 ( I think of that as the "huh?" factor。) It is a heartbreaking story, sadly , one that could happen, but in the end there is resolution and the possibility for happiness going forward which make it easier to take。 。。。more

An absolute must readI defy anyone to start this book and put it down。 A true crime thriller that will grab and hold you until the last page。 Don’t wait for the Netflix series! Give yourself a treat this summer and read this fascinating and insightful look into the pain caused by violence and bullying。 More twists than a pretzel。 A reminder that guilt casts a long shadow, and secrets are hard to keep。

Engaging, disturbing story。I liked the mood and complex story。 Very Canadian ending。 That may not make sense now, but it will when you get there, eh。

I really struggled deciding whether to give this three or four stars。 Ultimately, it’s somewhere in the middle for me。 I really did enjoy reading this book, and it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through。 In the end though, I was a bit disappointed。 While the ending managed to surprise me, I felt it was sloppily set up。 We heard throughout the book details that simply didn’t jive with the ending。 I’m assuming it was intentional to throw us off, but I think it was a lazy way to get a “b I really struggled deciding whether to give this three or four stars。 Ultimately, it’s somewhere in the middle for me。 I really did enjoy reading this book, and it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through。 In the end though, I was a bit disappointed。 While the ending managed to surprise me, I felt it was sloppily set up。 We heard throughout the book details that simply didn’t jive with the ending。 I’m assuming it was intentional to throw us off, but I think it was a lazy way to get a “big reveal”。 I also didn’t like how a lot of the characters who played a major role jn Leena’s death were seemingly given a pass at the end。 It just all seemed a little too convenient the way it all wrapped up。 All in all though, I’m glad I read this。 I’ve also read “The Drowned Girls” by this author and really enjoyed that, so I will definitely be reading more of her books! 。。。more

Time StretchesBeing a true crime podcast fan, this book really hit hard making me think if the implications of producing a story from the tragedy of a community。 I could not。 Stop。 Reading。 However, some of the verbiage seemed repetitive, juvenile, and in one case, completely incorrect。 Luckily I was able to quickly move past it to finish the story and, in the end, I was not disappointed。

Maybe I'm just getting jadedI stopped before the midpoint of both Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep and Grisham's latest book to try something else。 This free book actually held my attention better, but it was not a page turner。 Women might connect with it more than I did。 The mystery element was good -- lots of red herrings and I didn't solve it in advance。 Writing was good。 The story was just ok。 Not much to set it apart from from other mysteries, and lead characters not compelling。 Maybe I'm just getting jadedI stopped before the midpoint of both Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep and Grisham's latest book to try something else。 This free book actually held my attention better, but it was not a page turner。 Women might connect with it more than I did。 The mystery element was good -- lots of red herrings and I didn't solve it in advance。 Writing was good。 The story was just ok。 Not much to set it apart from from other mysteries, and lead characters not compelling。 。。。more

This was an excellent mystery with many surprises。 It was my choice for my Amazon Prime monthly free pick and I was lucky because I will be looking to purchase and read Loreth Anne White's other books。 This story is more than just a good story。 It's a morality play。 I highly recommend Beneath Devil's Bridge。 This was an excellent mystery with many surprises。 It was my choice for my Amazon Prime monthly free pick and I was lucky because I will be looking to purchase and read Loreth Anne White's other books。 This story is more than just a good story。 It's a morality play。 I highly recommend Beneath Devil's Bridge。 。。。more

Quick read and kept my attention throughout。 Didn’t want to put it down。

Well written mystery with lots of complexities。 However, the elephant in the room in this book is racism。 Though the bullying aspects were addressed, racism is at its heart and not really dealt with。 Disappointing。

Rita Strain

A truly gripping book I did not want to put down! The author did an excellent job of covering so many topics that are prevalent today。 Highly recommend this book。

An entertaining fast-paced mystery。 Don’t pull too hard at some of the inconsistencies or loose threads or you’ll feel your eyes rolling。 They’re not enough to spoil the fun so just enjoy。 There’s some good nuggets there too, about bullying, secrets, sexual abuse to name a few。

Really good crime drama!

2。5 stars, rounded up。Overall, this book is exciting enough, and provided an enjoyable murder mystery that kept me entertained until the end, but has some major flaws。 I thought the plot was pretty well done, with a few exceptions (see below); the dual timelines were also handled well enough, although it did make things awkward in some respects。 However, the writing was not up to par for me, so that brought it down a lot in my view。 We follow two characters from a first-person perspective, in tw 2。5 stars, rounded up。Overall, this book is exciting enough, and provided an enjoyable murder mystery that kept me entertained until the end, but has some major flaws。 I thought the plot was pretty well done, with a few exceptions (see below); the dual timelines were also handled well enough, although it did make things awkward in some respects。 However, the writing was not up to par for me, so that brought it down a lot in my view。 We follow two characters from a first-person perspective, in two timelines: First, we have Trinity, a true crime podcaster investigating a murder from 24 years before。 Second, we have Rachel, the main detective on the case, whose story is told both in the present day and at the time of the investigation。 There are also occasional chapters with an omniscient narrator that briefly explain the reactions of other characters in the town。Right from the beginning, I was not impressed with the writing in this book。 The dialogue was often quite awkward, and I often found myself thinking, "no one would speak like this。" This awkwardness also spilled over into non-dialogue descriptions, since everything was written in the first person, so it should have been written in such a way that it could be believable as the characters' internal dialogue, which it wasn't (ex。 "I find myself falling into myself and going quiet。")。Certain strange descriptions were very much overused, particularly in relation to time (I was so sick of hearing about "time stretching", and every time a photograph was mentioned, there was some cliche description about it being "frozen in time" or some such)。 Example: "Time elongates and shimmers。" (What? I guess this is meant to indicate a tense silence, but very weird。)In addition, there were WAY too many sentence breaks throughout, especially in the more suspenseful sections, which led to the writing feeling very choppy in parts。 (Example: "I hesitate。 Nod。 And come to my feet。" Why three separate sentences here???)The dual timelines sometimes led to awkward sentences that served to situate us in the timeline, but were often repetitive or unrealistic as someone's internal dialogue (ex。 "Or perhaps I'm just unwell after the long day yesterday that started with the autopsy and ended with my fight with Maddy。") And then there were some sentences that were just plain awkward。 (Ex: "Pratima died two years ago。 She choked on food in a restaurant。 Perhaps it was because nothing was easy for her to swallow after their baby girl was brutally assaulted and killed。" Yikes。)The reason I kept reading was because I wanted to know what happened, and overall, the plot was worthwhile。 I thought a very minor romantic subplot was unnecessary and poorly set up。 I also felt that the vibe of the very end was not realistic。 I don't mean how the mystery itself was resolved, but the reactions of the characters to that ending。 Overall, this was a fine pick for Amazon First Reads, and I enjoyed it, but I probably wouldn't recommend it too strongly over other books, if that makes sense。Content warnings:Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Bullying, Murder, Pedophilia, Violence, and Physical abuseModerate: Addiction, Alcoholism, Body shaming, Child abuse, Child death, Death, Death of parent, Fatphobia, Grief, Infidelity, Medical content, Mental illness, Racism, Rape, Sexual assault, and Sexual violenceMinor: Blood, Cancer, Car accident, Dementia, Incest, and Sexual content 。。。more
